The biggest breakthrough I had in life

Was when I realised I was not my thoughts.

What lead me to this realisation was by having anxiety and lots of reoccurring, obsessive thoughts.

My mind would repeat the same stories and fears over and over again and I felt as though I had no control over my thinking or my mind. It was in control of me.

I started pondering if I can’t control my thoughts, how are they just happening. . .

I tried everything..

Talk Therapy..

Seeing a councillor..

Trying to out think them..

Analyse them…

Try to stop them..

Taking supplements..

Trying to fix myself..

But it only created more and more thoughts. Have you ever heard of the analogy.

“Don’t think of a pink elephant and
you will think of a pink elephant”

Well this is true!

The more you try to fix and control, analyse your thoughts, the more thoughts you have and the more identified you become with your story’s, fears and thoughts. You think they are you and real.

This all changed when I started practicing meditation. One night I had just started going to sleep and I was in a state of awareness and I remember saying to myself,

“Hang on a minute, I am not purposely thinking these thoughts – they are just happening in my mind automatically like a running hard drive”

How can this be, If I am not thinking them, then who is the person aware of these thoughts happening.

This means I am not my thoughts!

I must be separate to my mind and my thoughts.

This lead me on the path of self-discovery and learning about the mind.

Thoughts just happen.

Do you know what you will think in the next 2 minutes?

You are not your thoughts.

Through meditation I learnt to be aware of thoughts and let them pass by like clouds in the sky, without judgement and reaction..

Sometimes I chase the cloud if it is positive and react to the cloud if it is negative..

But I know I am not the passing clouds –  I am the clear sky that is always behind the clouds practicing to let each cloud go day by day…
